Photocopy transfers

Image
(Found web image) I’ve been experimenting with photocopy transfer techniques recently to expand on my use of the photocopier. I haven’t had much luck with solvents, here a list of ones I’ve tried that I didn’t like: 1-orange power cleaner from safway. Made image run a little and didn’t transfer that much. But I didn’t try with a press or spoon (as rubbing the back really hard I’ve found helps) 2-ourderless turps, don’t buy this stuff it’s totally useless and being odourless it doesn’t have the kick of turps. 3- Gum turps, meant to be stronger than turps but the prints came out grey at best through a press. Maybe a spoon would of worked better. 4- ‘Picture this’ bought from spotlight. Basically no good as the backing of the transfer is opaque so I might as well just stick the copy down without any transferring. Would be good for quick, cheap (but effective) home job t-shirts from copies (as it’s washable) things I haven’t tried 1-acetone: meant to work well with press and spoon me

Carl Beam

Image
On a separate note I cam a cross a Canadian artist called Carl Beam whilst researching photocopy transfer methods. Something about his work amazes me. I really like his composition and also the idea behind his collage. Collage can often be too random and detached but Beam makes the images his own with out it being too obsessive. Sadly he passed away last year, hopefully I'll be able to dig up some more info about his life and work. Will post some images soon. Images courtesty of this site

Nobody Land

Image
Just came across Kieth’s site today. www.nobodyland.com Check it out for some visual goodness. Also D&Q have published a petite livre of his. In other news lately I have been finding the idea of vector graphics really appealing. This has been brought on by the lovely graphics at Loobylu and steve macks site steve macks site . No wonder steves keeping those texture techniques under his hat, I think there would be people that would kill for the knowledge or know how…
