Also known as zipatone, Ben-Day dots, halftones etc For this tutorial a basic knowledge of Photoshop, colour modes, resolution, history and layers pallete, copy and paste functions will help. It is often desirable to achieve screen tones for artwork for either practicality or for effect. What ever you need it for I am going to show you the most effective way to achieve this using Photoshop. If you can master this, then there is no need to track down real zipatone and fiddle around with cutting it up. A pivotal point in my comic drawing practice was when I started art school. Although I had already self-published comics in a zine format, 7 Pages felt my first true zine. It was the first thing that truly felt ziney. At the time, zines were more common and there were multiple online zine distros popping up. This meant that not only was it a zine, but it also fell into the subcategory of 'perzine' (personal zine).

To charge or not to charge

I've always been a big proponent of sharing work as freely as possible. My first zine 7 Pages was distributed freely, thanks to a free use photocopier at University; that only lasted about 5 months before the administration realized people were abusing it).  It's also the reason I love sharing my work online and avoided putting my work behind paywalls or subscription-based services.  My venture into digital publishing has raised a few questions. On one hand, I think it's important to value your work, and I think that if you make quality creative work then it deserves some form of reimbursement from the audience. But then another part of me sides with the general consensus of the internet which is, everything should be free.  To be more precise, everything should be initially free and don't bother the audience with how you support yourself. Usually, this takes the form of advertising or the sale of related products.
